Hex A Day:
The Sea Of Vipers
Hex a Day uses Twitter to offer daily site-based adventure seeds for your favorite fantasy RPG. Its first excursion was to the Sea of Vipers, which you can read about right here.
The Sea of Vipers lies south of Gandavor. Since the rise of the Technogogic Implementer, who promulgated new theories of magic, the fractious, traditionalist Rootborn magicians have opposed his unification schemes. After years of low-key hostilities, the islands’ magicians agreed to a Conclave Arcane, but the Implementer betrayed them and spoke the Word of Serpents, which killed hundreds of Rootborn, devastated the Island of Tamera, and triggered the Word-of-Serpents war. The Rootborn fought back, but they had already lost, and now the Technogogic Implementer’s five satraps, the Enthroned, rule the islands.

Setting Elements
The Sea of Vipers is intended for use with nearly any fantasy role-playing game.
The New Gods
Once, the spirit-gods of the White Ziggurat Age ruled from their gleaming citadels, but that was long ago. They fell silent and an age of arcane magic flourished under the Rootborn, but in the last millennium, new gods have appeared–far from omnipotent, but ambitious, active in the world (literally–you can find them on the map), and eager to promulgate their own mythologies. These are the new gods, embraced by the Technogogic Implementer and distrusted by the Rootborn. The new gods are organized around aspect (Air, Land, Sea, and Dreams) and diametrically opposed visions of Law and Chaos.

The Old Powers
The gods of the White Ziggurat age are mostly gone. Some merged to create “hero-twins” revered by warriors across the Sea of Vipers. All eventually left, until only the Seven Monarchs of the Shedu remained–then they, too, died, leaving tombs tended by forgotten priesthoods.

The Enthroned
Vice-potentates of the Technogogic Implementer, each is a powerful magician imprisoned in a floating throne that serves as a kind of mobile palace. The Implementer created them as his satraps, though many are now old and decrepit, and lack their master’s immortality magics.
The Throne of Carp and Lillies rules the East, the Throne of Antlers and Iron rules the North, the Sugar-Cane Throne rules the South, the Throne of Painted Macaws rules the West, and the Throne of Rings and Mirrors has dominion over the future and is prophesied to replace the Technogogic Implementer. The Thrones employ witch-knights, capable arcane warriors trained from childhood to serve as inquisitors, governors, and shock troops.
The Hero-Saints
Before the rise of the Technogogic Implementer and the cultural hegemony of Alu Pan, the best route to power was becoming a saint acknowledged by one of the old gods or the new. Then the proto-saint would claim a castle, rally soldiers to their banner, and challenge all worthy comers to single combat. This tradition still continues, and the marvelous castles of the hero-saints can be found all across the Sea of Vipers, though the hierarchy of the Technogogic Implementer asserts ever more control over their territory.
